Digital gold, explained properly

Digital gold lets you buy fractional grams of gold through an app — Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay and others resell gold sourced from issuers like MMTC-PAMP or SafeGold. It's the lowest-friction way to start, and also the costliest to hold long-term.

How it actually works

1. You buy through an app

No demat account, no minimum beyond a few rupees. The app is a reseller, not the actual custodian.

2. Gold is vaulted by the issuer

Physical gold backing your purchase sits with the issuer (e.g. MMTC-PAMP), not the app itself.

3. You can sell back anytime

Most apps buy back instantly at their quoted price — which includes their spread.

4. Or request physical delivery

Convert to a coin or bar and have it shipped — making and delivery charges apply.

The same loop, visually:

What it really costs

The convenience has a price — mostly hidden in the spread, not a visible fee line.

Buy-sell spreadTypically 2–3% between what you pay and what you'd get selling back immediately
GST3% on every purchase, same as physical gold
StorageUsually free for a few years, then a fee kicks in on some platforms — check the specific app's terms
Physical deliveryMaking charges + shipping if you convert to a coin/bar

The regulatory gap to know about

Digital gold is not directly regulated by SEBI or RBI, unlike Gold ETFs (SEBI-regulated mutual fund products). You're relying on the issuer's own custody and audit claims. Stick to apps backed by well-known, audited issuers, and don't treat this as a substitute for a regulated product if you're investing a meaningful amount.

Who this suits

Good fit

Small, irregular amounts — rounding up change, gifting, or testing the waters before committing to a demat-based option.

Less ideal fit

Large or long-term holdings, where the 2–3% spread compounds into a real drag compared to a Gold ETF's much lower ongoing cost.

Compare the real gap with the cost calculator, or see the Gold ETF alternative.
